Week 1: The Role of AI in Personalized Learning

Learning Focus:

For this week’s blog post, I went over the subject my group had selected: The Role of AI in Personalized Learning. My goal was primarily to gain a foundation of what personalized learning was, and secondarily how AI can factor into it, as well as understand the pros and cons of AI implementation.

Learning Tools:

To begin my research, I first explored the concept of personalized learning. Reading the article “Personalized learning: The simple, the complicated, the complex and the chaotic” (Gunawardena et al., 2023) helped me better understand personalized learning. To further visualize the topic, I decided it would be easier to break down my learning into three major points and put it into a drawn diagram using Procreate. I learned that personalized learning is a more customized format of education in which the teacher individualizes instruction methods per student. Afterwards, I began searching scholarly resources for AI’s role in Personalized Learning. Two articles particularly stood out to me: “REVOLUTIONIZING EDUCATION: HARNESSING THE POWER OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR PERSONALIZED LEARNING. KLASIKAL : JOURNAL OF EDUCATION, LANGUAGE TEACHING AND SCIENCE“, 5(2), 350–357 (Pratama, M. P. et al., 2023) and “Applications, challenges and ethical issues of
AI and ChatGPT in education” (Dimitrios Sidiropoulos, Christos-Nikolaos Anagnostopoulos, 2024).

Reflection:

After reviewing my readings, I broke down my Personalized Learning diagram into three main points: Student Proficiency, Student Agency, and Individualized Learning. Acknowledgement of student proficiency aided in identifying student strengths and weaknesses, and helps emphasize transferable skills. In terms of Student Agencies, students are able to feel they have a choice and flexibility within their learning outcomes, resulting in a democratic learning environment that would be applicable in future planning. Finally, individualized learning tended to encourage students to be more engaged in the content, and allowed for more thoughtful research and class discussions, deepening curiosity and exploration.

To better understand the role of AI in personalized learning, I broke down what AI can do to assist in learning outcomes into pros and cons lists:

Pros:

  • AI can help teachers tailor more personalized learning outcomes per student. Teachers can utilize AI to help with data analysis in the process of individualizing personal learning outcomes for students.
  • AI allows for easier production of course material. Using AI apps is more accessible than learning new platforms for the development of instructional materials.

Cons:

  • Data collection of students from AI apps raise privacy concerns amongst individuals.
  • Ethical and moral issues are raised into the equation as use of AI has a lack of regulations, and is often prohibited in higher education due to concerns of plagiarism.

In my beginning research of the Role of AI in Personalized Learning, I was able to identify what personalized learning was, and how AI might shape and impact it. I want to follow my research next week by delving further into what AI assists with in Personalized Learning.
